THE CHALLENGE
It was revealed that 80% of girls and women dispose off their used pads in latrines. Other places for waste disposal include bushes
and rubbish pits. There are concerns that some cultures prohibit the burning of used menstrual pads. (Ministry of Education: May 2021) Research has also shown that used sanitary pads, many of which end up thrown in the environment, take 500 to 800 years to decompose. It should be noted that Sanitation is the cornerstone of public health and improved sanitation contributes enormously to human health and well-being, especially for girls and women. Therefore, the lack of female-friendly toilets can put women and girls at greater risk of increased infections thereby missing out on many opportunities.
OUR WORK
We are looking forward to building incinerators in schools and communities to create safe clean spaces for changing and cleaning themselves, improve the health of girls and women as well as saving the environment. We will train girls and women about Menstrual Health Hygiene and Management for safe disposal of used sanitary pads and to build confidence and self-esteem during their periods. The boys and men will be engaged in the trainings to support the girls and women.
DONATE: Join to improve the Menstrual Hygiene of girls and women as we save the environment
Achievements and Successes
2011 – 2021: For a decade, we taught 32,564 girls in schools about Menstrual Hygiene so as to keep them healthy. We distributed more than 115,784 sanitary pads to girls thanks to our donors, corporate companies and well-wishers. We managed to train these girls from the rural areas of Uganda on how to make reusable sanitary pads so as to stay and remain in school. Girls have been able to remain in school and can now compete with the boys academically. The program has brought about menstrual hygiene management within the girls’ schools thereby reducing the rates of infections amongst girls.
Menstrual hygiene knowledge is crucial for girls and women to maintain their physical and mental health by preventing infections, promoting comfort during menstruation, boosting self-esteem and enabling them to participate fully in daily activities
Achievements and Successes
2022 – 2024: We have developed a prototype of how to dispose off sanitary pads to enable the girls safely dump the pads. We have built incinerators in schools and communities to enable us to directly burn the pads. Our method of burning enables the beneficiaries to use boiled clean water clean themselves. We are now reaching out to girls and women to teach them on how they can easily dispose of these sanitary pads by burning them.
Incinerators are the best method of disposing off used sanitary pads as they save the environment as well as reducing the garbage in the dumping sites.
THE FUTURE
INCINERATORS:
These are built in schools and communities to enable girls and women dispose off their used sanitary pads safely and efficiently. Our target is to build 100 incinerators to reduce on the pollusion of our communities with waste, filling up pit latrines and dumping of used sanitary pads in our communities.
Become our partner as we build safe spaces for girls and women that enable them to enjoy menstruation, build their self-esteem, prevent infections, uplift their confidence and mental health.Contact Us Now
