Bank a Pad Project – Safe Disposal of Sanitary Pads

The Bank a Pad is a girls and women friendly sanitary pad disposal project that is built as an extension on the toilet to incinerate the used sanitary pads aiming at improving cleanliness, good hygiene and saving the environment. We are creating a facility that encompasses a locally built incinerator, a water tank and a sink for washing reusable pads as well as enabling girls to clean and wash themselves with boiled clean water. The Bank a Pad Project will be an incinerator attached to the toilet that girls and women will deposit their used sanitary pads. It will have a metallic water tank and during the burning of the pads, they will be boiling the rain water collected from the nearby houses. The clean boiled water will be channeled to the washrooms that will hold a sink for washing and cleaning the reusable sanitary pads as well as cleaning themselves.

It was revealed that 80% of girls and women dispose off their used pads in latrines. Other places for waste disposal include bushes and rubbish pits. There are concerns that some cultures prohibit the burning of used menstrual pads. (Ministry of Education: May 2021) Research has also shown that used sanitary pads, many of which end up thrown in the environment, take 500 to 800 years to decompose. It should be noted that Sanitation is the cornerstone of public health and improved sanitation contributes enormously to human health and well-being, especially for girls and women. Therefore, the lack of female-friendly toilets can put women and girls at greater risk of damaging their health.

Our future Goal:

We are looking forward to building incinerators in schools and communities to create safe clean spaces for girls and women for changing and cleaning themselves, improve the health of girls and women as well as saving the environment. We will train girls and women about Menstrual Health Hygiene and Management for safe disposal of used sanitary pads and to build confidence and self-esteem during their periods. The boys and men will be engaged in the trainings to support the girls and women. We seek your partnership and financial support to build local incinerators that cost $5,406 each to improve the health of girls and women as well as save the environment.
