In 2024, Uganda’s youth unemployment rate was estimated to be around 16% and 72.3% of Uganda’s population was aged 30 and under, which is over 33 million people. This makes Uganda a youthful country. The 2024 National Population and Housing Census report says “Among the Ugandan youth aged 18 – 30 years in 2024, 35% were no longer in school and were in employment, while 12% were still in school and about 51% were neither in employment nor education training.

Young people with some education are more likely to be unemployed because formal sector jobs pay more but are harder to find. Young people in Uganda often feel that policymakers don’t pay attention to their concerns. Many young people in Uganda only think about white-collar jobs and government salaries.
